Several PhD positions are available for research in interdisciplinary area of transportation engineering and artificial intelligence at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Manitoba. Applicants with MSc in transportation engineering, industrial engineering, artificial intelligence or closely related areas with demonstrated experience in applications of machine learning in engineering are encouraged to apply. The position is for a post‐doctoral researcher in transportation engineering, with expertise in freight transportation systems (trucking), traffic engineering, and transportation data analysis. The position is available immediately, with an anticipated term of 12 months. The successful candidate will report to Dr. Jonathan Regehr, P.Eng. and alternately to Dr. Babak Mehran, P.Eng., Department of Civil Engineering. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with student researchers at the graduate and undergraduate levels, other collaborating engineering professors, and industry professionals.

This is an interdisciplinary position at the intersection of artificial intelligence, deep learning, and transportation systems. The Ph.D. student will work on research projects focused on developing innovative machine learning solutions for optimizing the operations of an electric autonomous vehicle-based transit system such as inferring trip characteristics, modeling trip choices, placement of charging stations along with reinforcement learning for optimizing the choice of system parameters.
